Varese is a city in north-western Lombardy,
northern Italy, 55 km north of Milan.
The conference will take place at Villa Toeplitz, a building sorrounded by a beautiful garden and next to
Sacro Monte,
one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Public transport in Varese is safe and reliable. Both trains and buses are frequent and efficient.
Varese is next to
Malpensa Airport. From Malpensa take the
Malpensa Express until Saronno (direction: Milan) then change train and go to Varese.
Approx. 1 hour.
Otherwise, take the bus "Autolinea Extraurbana Gallarate-Malpensa-Castelnovate" from the terminal 2
direction Castelnovate (
timetable in PDF). Take off at "Gallarate Stazione F.S." and then take the train
Trenitalia Ferrovie dello Stato (FS)
from Gallarate to Varese. Approx. 1 hour.
If you arrive either at Linate airport or at Bergamo (Orio al Serio) airport, then you have to go to Milan and take the train from there.
From Milan: you can take Trenitalia Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) from "Milano Porta Garibaldi" until the stop "Varese". Note that if you arrive in Milan at "Milano Centrale" station you should take the underground (MM2, green line) for 2 stations in order to go "Milano Porta Garibaldi". Download the official map of the metro if needed to change train station in Milan. Otherwise, you can take the Ferrovie Nord Milano (FNM) from "Milano Cadorna" to "Varese Nord". Approx. 1 hour.
Once in Varese, to get to Villa Toeplitz you can take the bus. Buy an urban bus ticket (1,05 euro or a carnet of 10 tickets for 9,60 euros) in any newsstand in Varese. You can buy the ticket on board, too, but you need to have the exact coins.
You must take the "C" bus in the direction of Sacro Monte. See the "C" bus timetable. You have to get off at the stop "Virgilio, 26 (Prealpi)", you may also ask the driver for the stop near Villa Toeplitz. Consider that at the previous stop "S. Ambrogio (Milite Ignoto)", there is a statue of the unknown soldier (Milite Ignoto) and a sign for the parking lot of the Villa.
The ride lasts approx. 15 minutes. The bus stop is about 200 m. from the Villa, just continue few steps in the direction of the bus and then turn right in Viale G.B. Vico. At the end of Viale Vico there is the entrance to the park of the Villa.

Varese is easily reachable by motorway. It is approx. one hour from Milan and it is next to the Switzerland border. Once arrived in the town, Villa Toeplitz lies at the bottom of the Sacro Monte. Follow the signs for "Sacro Monte / Campo dei Fiori". Once you are near the Villa you'll see the signs for the parking area.
We have reserved a limited number of rooms at the Istituto de Filippi. Here you can have a simple and plain room with private bathroom and breakfast for 32 euros per night. There is also a restaurant inside. We collect the reservations for this kind of accommodation, so if you wish to stay here please refer to the registration form. The place is 15 minutes walking to the city center and to the bus stop to Villa Toeplitz (see the map of Varese ).
Hotel Bologna is a nice and characteristic hotel in the center of Varese, close to the pedestrian area. Bus stop to Villa Toeplitz is very close. A single room costs 70 euros, you have to reserve by yourself through the web site of the hotel (you may refer to "Università dell'Insubria" in your reservation). We will have here the social dinner on Wednesday evening
